HOW TO INSTALL AND ACTIVATE YOUR SMARTY+ DONGLE

The Smarty+ dongle will be connected to the P1 port of the Smarty meter. Each Smarty meter that you want to monitor, needs to be equipped with a Smarty+ dongle.
The installation can be completed on your own without any physical intervention of your electricity grid operator or an electrician. You simply need to follow a few steps listed hereafter, also briefly described in the user manual.
Note that a good WiFi connection is needed to communicate the data.

REQUEST YOUR P1 ENCRYPTION KEY

To allow the Smarty+ dongle to decrypt the data from your Smarty meter and display it in the app, you have to request the P1 key from your electricity grid operator. Be aware that only the person to whom the meter is registered has the right to ask for this information!

CONNECT TOUR SMARTY+ TO THE P1 PORT

To install your Smarty+ dongle to the P1 port of your Smarty meter, push on the green cover and pull it down. The P1 port is now accessible and the connection cable can be attached. The green cover can then be put back in place by leading the connection cable through the small hole at the bottom edge of the cover.

You should under no circumstances remove the seals placed by your DSO on the Smarty meter since this would trigger a fraud alert.

The connection cable must then be plugged into the port in the middle of the back of the Smarty+ dongle.

After the activation process (see step below), you can mount the Smarty+ dongle in your metering cabinet or on your wall, either by fixing it with screws or by using the adhesive patch and sticking it on a magnetic surface.

WHAT TO DO IF YOUR SMARTY METER IS NOT FREELY ACCESSIBLE?

If your Smarty meter is located in the technical room of your residential building to which you do not have access, please contact your property manager to let you in.

For safety reasons, Smarty meters in older installations may be installed behind a plexiglass protection (to avoid exposure to unshielded live parts). In these cases, the intervention of the DSO is required. Please contact your DSO to help you with the installation of the Smarty+ dongle free of charge.

ACTIVATE YOUR SMARTY+ THROUGH THE APP

Download the Smarty+ app via the Apple App Store or the Google Play Store. The application is visible only in the Luxembourgish app-stores and runs on iOS 11 and Android 5 or on later versions of those operating systems.

To start activating your Smarty+ dongle, you will need to note your WiFi password in addition to the P1 key. Only the standard 2.4 GHz WiFi network is supported.

Open the Smarty+ application and follow the instructions. To verify your account, an email will be sent to the address provided during activation process, and you will need to open it on the same phone as the one on which the application is being installed! The following steps will ask you to add the Smarty+ dongle to your account, accept the terms and conditions and enter the WiFi password and the P1 key. As soon as the communication is established, the dongle decrypts the data collected by the Smarty meter and sends it to your smartphone.

An additional Smarty+ dongle can be added by selecting Account > MySmarty+ dongles and clicking on the plus symbol in the upper right corner.

If you interrupted the activation process of your dongle in the Smarty+ app before hand, e.g. because you still had to request your P1 key, you can resume it at any time at the same step. To do so, please click on My Smarty+ dongles in your account settings and select the dongle for which you want to continue the activation.

ACTIVATE THE COMMUNICATION OF YOUR GAS AND WATERMETERS

If your gas and water meters are intelligent and connected to the Smarty meter, these readings can also be displayed in the Smarty+ app without installing an additional dongle.

As a gas customer, it is likely that your gas meter is intelligent and thus connected to your Smarty electricity meter. Check with your gas grid operator to see if this is the case for your home.

Some municipalities have opted to install smart water meters that transfer their measurements via the Smarty electricity meter to a common platform. Check with the technical department of your municipality to see if those smart water meters are available where you live.

To display the data from any of these meters in the Smarty+ app, you can request the transfer of the meter reading via the P1 port of the Smarty electricity meter by email to your gas grid operator (see addresses above) or to the technical department of your municipality.

As you may have gathered from the FAQs, some incidents like a new WiFi password or new P1 key (due to a meter replacement, change of energy supplier or moving home) may require a dongle deactivation and reset.

If your dongle has never been connected to a Wifi network, go to Account > My Smarty+ dongles > Choose dongle and deactivate it. Then proceed to the dongle resetting, by unplugging it and plugging it back in, while keeping the reset button pressed until the LED flashes after about 10 seconds.

To reset your dongle that has already established a Wifi connection, use a pin to push the button at the back of the dongle for 5 seconds. No need to disconnect the dongle form the Smart Meter! This will reset the configuration of your dongle but not lose your historical data.
